School Break Food Boxes

The Kirkland Nourishing Networks (KNN) School Break Food Box Program provides nutrition to food-insecure families with children in public schools in Kirkland, WA. Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on gatherings such as to collect food boxes, we are distributing grocery cards to families instead of boxes of food.

Donate

A typical box of food costs about $50, so please consider donating at least that amount (or $50 times the number of boxes you would donate). Any size donation is appreciated. Nourishing Networks, a 501(c)3 charity, is the fiscal sponsor of The KNN School Break Food Box Program, and your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law and may be eligible for corporate matching gift programs.

Community Success

Thanks to our generous Kirkland community (THAT’S YOU!), we distributed over $160,000 worth of grocery cards to support food-insecure families from April through the end of the 2019-2020 school year, and more than $80,000 for the Thanksgiving and Winter breaks. Our goal is to raise $85,000 so we can provide $50 gift cards to around 800 families a couple of times this spring. This will supplement food needs while kids are missing their take-away breakfast and lunch from the schools.

School Break Food Boxes- Kirkland is a network of individuals and volunteers and not a registered charity, and under normal circumstances does not handle monetary donations. We are grateful that Nourishing Networks Consortium is partnering with us to accept donations to purchase grocery gift cards for distribution to food-insecure families.

Volunteer

For a normal Kirkland Nourishing Network school break food box day, on the morning of the event volunteers help food box donors bring their boxes from the parking lot into the church. In the afternoon, volunteers help recipient families carry their boxes out to their cars.

However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak current in progress and until the governor’s phased recovery plan allows gatherings of the size needed for a regular food box day, we will instead be distributing grocery food cards to families. Donations toward covering that cost are welcome and encouraged (see the Home page), but we will not have the usual morning and afternoon time-slot volunteer signups.

Thanks for your continuing support for food-insecure families in Kirkland!
